Fire destroys sugarcane crop

Kancheepuram, Dec 8 (UNI) A major fire destroyed sugarcane crop worth Rs 12 lakh at Illayanarvellore in this district today.

According to police, the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Fire tenders from Kancheepuram, Uttaramerur and Wallajahbad were rushed to the spot to put out the conflagration.

Fire service personnel fought the blaze for nearly four hours before they could bring it under control thereby saving sugarcane crop on the adjoining 180 acre of land.

MLA Sakthikamalambal visited the spot and consoled the villagers.
