Defence Car Rally to Yangoon
Kohima, Dec 8: A 45-member Indo-Myanmar Car Rally, which flaggedoff by Defence Minister A K Anthony at New Delhi on Tuesday last, inpresence of Myanmar's Chief of the Army Staff General Thura Shwe Mann,will arrive Dimapur on Sunday next on their way to Yangoon in Myanmar.
According to defence release here today the team members of theCar Rally will pay obeisance with full military honour to 1819 IndianSoldiers of World War II of undivided India, who have been laid to restat Taukkyan War Cemetery, Yangoon in a commemorative ceremony. Themortal remains of a large number of Indian soldiers who fought in WorldWar II lie in Myanmar, earlier known as Burma, which was once part ofthe British colonial India.
The remains have been recovered even from remote and inaccessibleforests to be consecrated in Taukkyan War Cemetery, near Yangoon.
The rally, including three teams from Myanmar Army, would cover adistance of over 8000 Km and traverse over rugged mountains, denseforest and numerous rivers of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Nagaland,and Manipur, to enter Myanmar via Moreh of Manipur, which will transitthrough Tamu, Mandalay and Taungoo of Myanmar to reach the capitalYangoon.
This rout will acquaint them with a number of historicalbattlefields of the Burma Campaign of World War II, where a number ofIndian Army regiments had won their battle honours with distinction,the release said.
