Varanasi, Dec 8 (UNI) A criminal case has been registered against newly elected mayor of Varanasi and BJP leader Kaushalendra Singh in connection with violence by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists in district hospital premises on Tuesday last.
A case was registered by the District hospital administration here yesterday against Mr Singh and others for violence on the hospital campus police said here today.
The case has been registered under sections 143,323,353,427 and 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), police added.
At least 12 students, mostly associated with the ABVP -- BJP's student wing -- were wounded during clashes with students backed by ruling SP's Samajwadi Chatra Sahbha (SCS) near Harishchandra PG College here on Tuesday evening.
Agitated over the incident, the ABVP activists went on rampage damaging district hospital property, including an ambulance parked near the emergency ward.
Meanwhile, reacting to the registeration of case, the Varanasi mayor Mr Singh termed it as ''a conspiracy hatched by the ruling SP, which is still not able to swallow defeat in the mayoral elections.
The case has been registered against me by the hospital administration only at the behest of the ruling party.'' UNI ARS MB SK RAI1906
