TRS scores major win in Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad, Dec 7: The bypoll results in Andhra Pradesh gave a major win to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), with its chief K Chandrasekhara Rao retaining the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat with a thumping majority of 2,01,000 votes.
State-wide honours were, however, even with B Jhansi (Cong) taking Bobbili by a slender margin of 157 votes.
Mr Chandrasekhara Rao defeated T Jeevan Reddy of the Congress, the TRS' erstwhile alliance partner, while Ms Jhansi, a state Minister's wife, wrested the seat from the TDP.
A total of 7,93,932 voters, out of 14,19547 electorate, exercised their franchise in Karimnagar, while in Bobbili, of 10,14,405 electorate, 7,02,618 cast their vote in the December 4 bypoll.
Mr Chandrasekhara Rao polled 3,78,030 votes while the Congress' T Jeevan Reddy got 1,76,448 and TDP's L Ramana 1,70,268. The BJP's Ch Vidyasagar Rao lost his deposit by getting only 21,144 votes.
In Bobbili, Ms Jhansi got 3,34,321 votes, while the TDP candidate Appala Naidu was narrowly behind at 3,34,164 votes. The BJP's Sanyasi Raju polled 14,837 votes and lost the deposit.
The percentage of votes polled in Karimnagar was 55.80 per cent as against 65.12 per cent in the 2004 general elections. In Bobbili, it was higher at 71.14 per cent, though less than 76.54 in 2004.
The Karimnagar poll was necessitated by the TRS chief resigning in protest against the UPA government's inaction on formation of separate Telangana and to seek a fresh 'referendum' for statehood.
In Bobbili, it was due to the sudden death of MP Paiditalli Naidu. His son Apppla Naidu was put up by the TDP.
