UPA would not favour tax evaders: Chidambaram
New Delhi, Dec 5: Finance Minister P Chidamabaram today asserted in the Lok Sabha that the UPA government was not showing lenience towards any company in the matter of recovery of tax arrears.
Replying to a submission by Samajwadi Party member MOhan Singh on the delay in recovering tax arrears totalling Rs 199 crore from Aurangabad-based Vedanta group of companies, he said there were about 20 companies who were in huge arrears. The present government had recovered more arrears as compared to previous years.
He said the Vedanta Group of Companies had filed a statutory appeal before the Mumbai High Court against the confirmation of the order of adjudication by the adjudicating authority and got a stay.
The case was later transferred to the Aurangabad bench which did not have regular revenue bench.
The Revenue department had taken up the issue of delay with the Chief Justice of the Mumbai High Court.
''We will contest the case strongly. We are confident to win the case. Any favour is never shown on such matters," Mr Chidamabaram said.
