UP govt passes resolution for reservation to Dalit Muslims
Lucknow, Dec 5 (UNI) Amid boycott by Congress and BSP and noisy walkout by BJP, the ruling Samajwadi Party today passed a resolution in the Uttar Pradesh assembly to recommend the centre for amending the Constitution including reservation to dalit Muslims and Christians under Article 341.
Alleging the resolution was brought for political reasons just before the assembly poll and to counter the Sachar Committee report on the minorities' status, the BJP opposed the resolution saying it was an effort to divide the society.
''Such benefit to Muslims and Christians would encourage conversion as now people would adopt shorter path to get the benefit,'' the BJP leaders further claimed.
Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) members were absent in the house when the resolution was passed.
State parliamentary affairs minister Mohd Azam Khan piloted the resolution in the absence of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Congress and BSP were boycotting the house proceedings over deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and patronage of criminals by the ruling SP.
Opposing the resolution, BJP leader Hukum Singh said the resolution was a 'fraud' by the SP regime like the Congress had done through the Sachar Committee report.
''Both the Congress and SP are in run for the Muslim vote bank before the crucial assembly poll,'' he observed.
Other BJP leaders, including Laxmi Kant Bajpai and Om Prakash Singh, decried the reservation on religion basis, saying if the same was considered by the centre, it would be intefering with the present quota of Hindu SCs.
Replying to the objections raised by the BJP members, Mr Khan said SP was committed to uplifting the minorities socially and economically as they have genuine right to be included under Article 341 of the Constitution.
''The apprehension about the encouragement of conversion raised by the members is wrong and it is the duty of everyone to give the dalit Muslims and Christians their due right,'' he maintained.
