Telegrams requested cancellation of Rajapakse's Doon visit
Dehra Dun, Dec 5 (UNI) Chairman of All India Council of Mayors and Dehradun Mayor Manorama Dobriyal Sharma today said she had received seven telegrams from different people asking her to cancel the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa who was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function of the Ist Asian Mayors Conference on November 26.
After a week of the conclusion of the Conference on November 28, Ms Sharma told UNI that she had received the telegrams three days prior to the inaugural function. However due to security reasons it was not disclosed and the telegrams were handed over to Local Intelligence Unit for investigation.
Photocopy of the telegrams issued by the Mayor's Office to the media indicate that all the telegrams were sent from Krishnagiri.
However, designation of the Mayor is quoted as ''Manorma Dobriyal Sharma, Mayor, Mahila Congress President, Uttaranchal Pradesh Congress Committee which is irrelevant as she is no more the President of Mahila Congress. The name of Sri Lankan President is also spelled wrongly (MAHINDA RAJA BAKSHE).
The names quoted in the seven different telegrams include G Padmanabhan, T Vishnukumaran, Carlos, P Munuswamy, M Thirunavukkarasu, Sreekumar and KM Anil. All the senders are designated as Col.
When asked about the possibility of LTTE's involvement in sending telegrams asking her to 'cancel the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Raja Bakshe', Ms Sharma said ''I do not know how LTTE functions, however it is possible that somebody did not want success of Asian Mayors Conference''. She maintained that the incident was being investigated by the intelligence unit and only after it is over, the involvement of LTTE could be established. Dehradun SSP has however ruled out involvement of any terrorist outfit in the incident.
