Sponge iron production rises up during 2005-06

New Delhi, Dec 5 (UNI) The total installed capacity of sponge iron in 2005-06 was 189.51 lakh tonnes as against 129.71 lakh tonnes produced in 2004-05.

According to offical sources, the actual production in 2005-06 was placed at 126.49 lakh tonnes as against 102.96 lakh tonnes in the previous year and 80.85 lakh tonnes during 2003-04.

India exported 41,454 tonnes sponge iron during 2005-06 in place of 29,800 tonnes in 2004-05 and 8,905 tonnes in 2003-04.

At present there are 241 sponge iron units in the country out of which 73 are in Orissa, 51 in Chhatisgarh, 33 in Jharkhand, 31 in West Bengal, 21 in Karnataka, 16 in Andhra Pradesh, seven in Maharashtra, four each in Goa and Tamil Nadu and one in Gujarat.
