RS members criticise govt for price rise
New Delhi, Dec 5 (UNI) BJP leader Maya Singh today blamed the government policies for rise in prices of essential commodities.
She said while farmers are starving and committing suicides, traders or middlemen are getting rich.
As many essential commodities of daily use become beyond the reach of middle class, common people are suffering, Ms Singh said while opening a short duration discussion in the Rajya Sabha.
She said the scope of service tax has now been enlarged to over 100 businesses. At the same time, the consumer price index and the wholesale price index of past three years show that prices of wheat have gone up 18.7 per cent, of urad dal by 56 per cent and potato by 46 per cent.
Opposing her views, Congress leader Santosh Bagrodia said the price rise is a worldwide phenomenon. It is related to demand-supply ratio.
In the past one year alone, salaries have gone up by 14.1 per cent, said Mr Bagrodia.
The discussion will continue tomorrow.
