Rajdeep Sardesai issue returns to haunt UP assembly
Lucknow, Dec 5 (UNI) The issue of CNN-IBN Managing Editor Rajdeep Sardesai again rocked the Uttar Pradesh assembly today with members threatening to move a privilege motion against him for his reported comment on the legislature.
The members were also annoyed with the procedure, through which contempt case against him was dropped yesterday without taking in ''confidence'' the house and the committee engaged in probing the sting operation by the channel against three sitting MLAs.
The members took great exception on Mr Sardesai's reported statement that he wanted to know the privilege of the legislators after contempt case was dropped against him by the speaker.
BJP leader and a member of the sting probe committee Laxmi Kant Bajpai said some leaders had 'hijacked' the proceedings in the official chamber of the speaker.
''It was the speaker's duty to call Mr Sardesai in the house when the resolution of contempt was passed by the entire house,'' Mr Bajpai said and threatened there is need of an inquiry committee after such ''insult.'' Committee chairperson P K Rai supported the views of Mr Bajpai and said before dropping the contempt case against the editor, the speaker should have taken the committee's view.
Interestingly, parliamentary affairs minister Mohd Azam Khan also admitted norms were not followed in the procedure of dropping the contempt case and regretted the lapses on behalf of the government.
Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey observed he took the decision on the recommendation of senior leaders of all parties, and he could not bring Mr Sardesai in the assembly as the house was not in order the whole day due to protest by BSP members over Ambedkar statue.
He informed the matter would be open for debate during the next house sitting.
