PSB, IOC declared joint winners
Lucknow, Dec 5 (UNI) Last year's winners Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) shared the top position of the K D Singh Babu memorial prize money hockey championship with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Mumbai after the conclusion of the tournament here today.
In the final at the Dhyan Chand Stadium here, both teams remained goal-less and were declared joint winners by the organising committee.
Both teams shared the cash prize money of Rs 1 lakh. However, calling rightly to the toss the winner's trophy will be in possesion of PSB, while runners up trophy will be in custoday of IOC for the first six months, thereafter they will exchange the trophies.
PNB won the third place and pocketed Rs 25,000 cash prize.
Jaswinder Singh of IOC was declared best player of the tournament earning a cash prize of Rs 10,000, Parminder Singh of PSB (Best forward), Devender Singh-PSB (best Half), Diwakar-IOC (best full back) and Baljit Singh-IOC (best goalkeeper) took home Rs 5,000 cash prizes each.
In the final, both teams remained tied after the allotted 70 minute time, although they tried their best to score, missing a number of opportunities.
The PSB strategy to cover the movements of Olympian Viren Rasquinha on the field bore the results as he failed to take control over the ball at crucial times.
The spactators witnessed some tense moments, when PSB players left the field for a few minutes to protest the decision of one of the umpires.
PSB men forced the umpire to award a penalty stroke, when IOC defender held the ball in front of the goal post.
Earlier, for the third place match PNB beat Western Railway Mumbai 4-2.
Uttar Pradesh sports and youth welfare minister R K Chowdhary gave away the prizes.
