Shillong, Dec 05 (UNI) The Civil Society Women's Organisation(CSWO) in Meghalaya today expressed concern over the frequent eviction of street vendors from Khlieh Iewduh (Shillong's main market) by the armed forces.

In a memorandum to Governor M M Jacob and Minsiters in-charge Urban Affairs Paul Lyngdoh here, the CSWO pointed out that these vendors were mostly women coming from families living below the poverty line and trying to make ends meet by selling second hand clothes.

In the past, the Women's Organisation said the army authorities had assured that these vendors would not be evicted nor harrased but allowed to conduct their business.

However, on November 27 the army broke their assurance by evicting the vendors from Khlieh Iewduh.

The CSWO urged the governor and the minister to take up the matter with the concerned authorities to ensure that such incidents do not occur in future.
