Innovative science to transform society: C N R Rao
Mumbai, Dec 5 (UNI) Variety of new materials with innovative properties developed during last 50 years have transformed society, Chairman of Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister Prof C N R Rao has said.
Prof Rao was delivering the keynote address on the occasion of first international symposium on Material Chemistry organized by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) yesterday, said a BARC release.
Prof Rao talked of new eco-friendly materials being developed in green chemistry and about the carbon nano tubes and its applications, the release said.
He also spoke on the possibility of existing magnetic glass, which contains the domains of anti-ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic fuel material in the same compound, said the release.
Prof Rao highlighted zeolite like materials designed on organic molecules. Hybrid organic-inorganic materials, which will have better solutions for hydrogen storage have the flexibility of organic and rigidity of inorganic structures, the release added.
He referred to the present day challenges before materials chemists of transforming new molecules into materials.
According to chairman and secretary of Atomic Energy Commission Dr Anil Kakodkar, material chemistry plays an important role in studying nuclear fuels under extreme conditions and transport of radioactivity.
It also helps in visualising and actual implementation from mining to the nuclear waste disposal, thorough materials characterization, said Dr Kakodkar.
Dr S Banerjee, Director, BARC in his brief remarks also stressed on the role of materials chemistry in industry.
More than 400 scientists, engineers, researchers from different parts of the country attended the function.
