HC upholds decision to stage Shooting nationals at Delhi
Chennai, Dec 5 (UNI) The Madras High Court today upheld the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI)'s decision to shift to New Delhi from Chennai the venue of the National Clay Target shooting Championship between December 14 and 20.
A Division Bench comprising Mr Justice P K Misra and Mr Justice J A K Sampath Kumar upheld the decision while disposing of a petition filed by advocate R Karuppan, challenging the same.
The Bench said as far as holding the championship at Delhi was concerned, NRAI and Chennai Rifle Club (CRC) had said in their counter that it had been decided to hold the championship in New Delhi as the present year was the 50th golden jubilee year of the National Championships and Delhi was convenient place for the Vice- President of India to grace the occasion. All arrangements had already been made, they said.
The shooting range in Chennai was waterlogged on account of heavy rainfall during the monsoon and could not be used even for practice.
So, there was no possiblity of organising any championship.
It was at the NRAI's discretion to decide where the meet should be held. It was no doubt true it would be in the interest of all sports loving persons to hold the championship in different places in different years. 'We have no doubt in years to come, NRAI would try to rotate the championship among all eligible centres so that all sports enthusiasts throughout the country would be benefited and the sport will get a natural fillip. As far as the championship for the present year was concerned, there was hardly any time to shift the venue from New Delhi to any other place including Chennai,' the bench added.
