Goondas Act will not serve actual purpose: CPI

Puducherry, Dec 5: Communist Party of India Puducherry Secretary Na Ra Kalainathan today said the introduction of Goondas Act will not help to bring down crimes in the Union Territory.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Kalainathan feared that the Goondas Act would be utilised by ruling party for political vendetta and not to curb crimes.

The nexus between criminals and police officials should be identified and steps be taken to curb this, he added.

He said the state committee meeting had resolved to organise a demonstration here tomorrow to condemn the atrocities unleashed on dalits.

Alleging that the UPA government had failed to curb price rise, Mr Kalainathan said his party would organise a protest demonstration in front of the head post office here on December nine.

The meeting also resolved to extend full support to the December 14 all India general strike.

Mr Kalainathan called up on the elected local body representatives to reconsider their proposed bandh on December 12 in view of the December 14 general strike by the trade unions.

The party had no second opinion on the devolution of powers to elected local body representatives.

On the JIPMER issue, the CPI leader said the details of the JIPMER Bill was yet to be known and in such a circumstance, the party was not prepared to make any comments on the issue.

If the proposed autonomous status to JIPMER affect the employees and the patients, the party would certainly oppose the move, he added.
