Shillong, Dec 5 (UNI) The Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Meghalaya has imposed a fine on a local headman of Jhalupara area here for issuing fake death certificates to three people.

Prakash Bhandari confessed in the court yesterday of having issued fake death certificates to save three people involved in communal clashes in 1998. The court also issued arrest warrants for the trio.

State police have identified nine persons for creating trouble.

One of the accused, Gautam Gurung was found murdered in 2004.

Refusing to divulge how much the court had imposed fine on Bhandari, Assistant Public Prosecutor A. Begum said Bhandari was summoned to the court on November 9 and confessed his crime. She said the court had warned the headman not to repeat the mistake or else face a prison term upto three months.

Mrs Begum said the matter came to light when the government attorney found the death certificates missing from the Shillong Municipal Board records.
