Bembem Devi, Anita Chanu miss glory; lost in medal round

Written by: Staff

Doha, Dec 5 (UNI) Manipuri duo of Laishram Bembem Devi (48kg) and Angom Anita Chanu (52kg) lost when it hurt most -- in the Bronze medal bouts -- as both the Indians were ruthlessly decimated by their respective Japanese and Kazakh opponents in the judo competition at the 15th Asian Games here today.

In the 48 Kg category, it was over for Bembem Devi before she could even bat an eyelid as her formidable Japanese rival Misato Nakamura scored an ippon to win the bout and the Bronze in 30 seconds.

Chanu was better but just a shade as was overpowered by Gulzhan Issanova of Kazakhastan, who also scored an ippon to win in less than two minutes.

Earlier, the Manipuri judokas sparkled to make it tantalisingly close to the glory.

In women's 48kg Repechage Final B, Laishram Bembem Devi and her opponent Nancy quillotes went neck and neck before the Philippino broke loose when she pinned down the Indian and was awarded a yuko.

Bembem Devi, however, hit back by managing a throw to her opponent's back to earn a waza-ari or a half a point and that proved decisive in the end.

In the women open category, Angom Anita Chanu took little more than two and a half minutes to pin down local favourite Rawdha Al Abdulla and win by scoring an ippon.

Chanu managed an early koka with her better technique but the Qatari judoka refused to give in before the Indian settled the issue with an ippon.

In the men open, Anil Kumar, however, proved no match for his Uzbek opponent Adiljan Tulendibaev and lost in one minute and 45 seconds.
