Written by: Staff

Doha, Dec 5 (UNI) Anup Sridhar and Chetan Anand gave India a rousing start with facile victories over their rivals to storm into the pre-quarterfinals of the singles event of the badminton competition in the Asian Games here today.

Also making the last 16 grade was Sanave Thomas-Rupesh Kumar in men's doubles, besides woman shutller Trupti Murugunde.

Anup had no difficulty in accounting for Sri Lanka's D Thilshan Karunaratne in straight games in a match which lasted just 20 minutes.

The Indian was far superior to his Lankan rival as he throughout dominated the court and emerged winner 21-16, 21-12.

Anup tired out Karunaratne with his intelligent placements and lobs and the Lankan had no answer to that. The Indian, however, took time to settle down and in that period Karunaratne managed to garner some points.

The first game lasted 11 minutes but the Indian hurried up the matter in the second, wraping it up in nine minutes while conceding 12 points to his rival to claim it 21-12 and seal the match.

In another match, Commonwealth Games Bronze medal winner Chetan Anand made short work of Bahrain's Jaafar Hasan 21-9, 21-11 in just 15 minutes.

Anand took seven minutes to finish the first game and eight minutes to claim the second to clinch the match.

In men's doubles, Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar had a very easy outing against the Sri Lankan pair of D Karunaratne and Nishan Karunaratne. The Indians took 15 minutes to win the one-sided match 21-6, 21-9.

In the women's section, Trupti got walkover from Julia Wong of Malaysia.
