Videocon to launch PC in Bengal

Kolkata, Dec 4: In a bid to promote hardware manufacturing in the state, Videocon is all set to launch its PCs in West Bengal soon.

''We will start selling our PCs in the state followed by North East, which is an extremely potential region, yet highly neglected market. Then we will spread our marketing network across the eastern region within this fiscal,'' Videocon Head-IT and Personal Computer Division Biswajit Mohinta told UNI today.

Mr Mohinta said from February Videocon PCs would start full-fledged marketing activity in the region.

However, he did not divulge from which unit the company would manufacture Personal Computers.

''There has been a growth in the software segment in the state.

Similar growth in the hardware segment is also required to have proportional development in the Information Technology,'' he said.

''We are one of the leaders in electronics business, which is in synergy with the IT business. Naturally the diversion is very much justified and we have big plans for our upcoming IT venture,'' he added.

Videocon is known for its efforts in overtaking sick plants and start production in those revived unit. ''Our first such effort started with the takeover of the Philips plant at Salt Lake in 1998.

The plant, which was at that time on the verge of closure, is performing well from its first year of operations,'' he said. The company is manufacturing its display devices at Saltlake. In 2005, the company once again took over the second unit of Philips Lamp Manufacturing plant at Taratala (Kolkata) and revamped it to start the production of Videocon appliances.

Videocon is coming out with five special economic zones (SEZs) in West Bengal, two at Siliguri and three in and around Kolkata.
