Jammu, Dec 4: Pilgrims witnessed the first snowfall at the world famous Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine on the Trikuta hills near Katra, even as the entire region continued to reel under intense cold wave.

''There were heavy rains at the Shrine last evening before it started snowing on the upper reaches. Bhairon Nath Mandir is covered with snow,'' a police official at the Bhawan told UNI.

While the upper reaches experienced snowfall, the lower areas of the region witnessed heavy rains since yesterday, thereby bringing the day temperature down to 17.2 degrees Celsius-- 6.1 degrees below normal, according to the Met sources.

Although people here preferred to stay indoors, there was, however, not much difference in the number of pilgrims reaching the holy cave Shrine to pay obeisance, they added.

Meanwhile, the famous hill resort of Patni Top also witnessed season's first snowfall.

The 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was open for vehicular movement today.

''The traffic is normal on the highway for passenger vehicles but as there was snowfall, we have allowed load carriers to move only from one side,'' SSP National Highway Suresh Kumar Sharma said.
