Sharath Kamal, Roy win in singles; doom elsewhere
Doha, Dec 4 (UNI) Ace paddlers Achanta Sharath Kamal and Soumyadeep Roy chalked out contrasting wins to advance into the pre-quarterfinals even as their women counterparts -- Poulomi Ghatak and Mouma Das -- crashed out of the singles event of the table tennis competition at the 15th Asian Games here today.
Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Sharath Kamal struggled against Doan Kien Quoc before overpowering his Vietnamese rival 11-6, 11-7, 13-15, 11-5, 11-9. Roy, on the other hand, had it easy has he beat Anwar Saleh of Bahrain 11-8, 11-5, 11-5, 11-4.
In women singles, Mouma Das fought hard but lost to Thai Nanthana Komwong 6-11, 11-7, 8-11, 5-11, 6-11 while Poulomi Ghatak went down to Lin Ling of Hong Kong 7-11, 6-11, 2-11, 12-10, 4-11.
However in the doubles event, Mouma and Poulomi won their opening match but lost in the quarterfinals to crash out of the competition.
The Indian pair lost to Lin Ling and S F Lau of Hong Kong 11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 4-11 in the pre-quarterfinals after they defeated L Kejebachian and So Shakian 11-7, 11-6, 12-14, 11-5 in their opening match.
Kasturi Chakraborty and Mousumi Pal couldn't even clear the first hurdle and crashed out after losing to A Fujinuma and A Fukuhara of Japan 9-11, 2-11, 6-11 in their opening tie.
Men's doubles was even more disappointing affair with the pair of Pathik Nisheeth Mehta-Subhajit Saha, and Sharath Kamal-Soumyadeep Roy faltering at the very first hurdle.
Mehta-Saha surrendered infornt of Chang Yen Shu and Chih Chi Wu of Chinese Taipei 5-11, 4-11, 6-11 while Sharath Kamal-Roy lost to the Vietnamese pair of Doan Kien QUoc and DInh Quang 9-11, 9-11, 9-11.
