Rain denies Punjab outright win

Mohali, Dec 4 (UNI) Rain denied Punjab a likely win over Gujarat and the hosts had to contend with two points by virtue of their first innings lead from the drawn tie after the weathergods permitted only 51 minutes of play on the fourth and last day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at the PCA Stadium here today.

Resuming at their overnight score of 86 for one, Gujarat made 125 for two at the final draw of stumps.

The umpires ended the match at 1600 hrs due to fading lights.

Nilesh Modi remained not out on 52 and Kirat Damani remained not out on 13. The only wicket to fall today was of overnight not out Timil Patel (39) who was caught behind by Pankaj Dharmani of the bowling of Gagandeep Singh (two for 43).

Punjab now face Mumbai in their next match at the PCA Stadium from December 9.

Gujarat made 208 in their first innings and Punjab replied with 503 for nine declared.
