Rahul sole leader after Mondal topples Deepan in Subroto chess

Written by: Staff

New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) International Master Rahul Shetty of Indian Airlines continued his winning spree to emerge the sole leader after unheralded Santu Mondal of West Bengal shocked top seeded Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy of Indian Oil in the Subroto Mukerjee Memorial FIDE-rated chess tournament here today.

Rahul beat IM R Balasubramaniun of Tamil Nadu on the top board to register his sixth win from as many games, thereby maintaining a clean slate so far.

The Mumbai-based player is half a point clear of nearest rivals Umakant Sharma of Jharkhand, IM Sriram Jha of LIC and Gurpreet Pal Singh of Delhi.

With five rounds still to come in the Rs 3 lakh prize money tournament, as many as 11 players including IM Himanshu Sharma are in joint fifth spot having five points each in their bag.

For Deepan, who bagged the junior gold in the just concluded Commonwealth championship, luck seemed to be deserting him and today's loss was his second in the tournament.

It was in endgame where Deepan miscalculated, misjudged and mismanaged to go down. From a three pawns less endgame, Mondal could not believe his eyes when Deepan gave an exchange sacrifice hoping to turn his pawn brigade in to a full point.

Much to his own dismay, the Grandmaster suddenly felt the heat as Mondal came up with precise moves to get his passed pawn rolling on the queen side and won easily.

Rahul, on the other hand, struggled for a while against Balasubramaniun but cashed in on an optical mistake to get a theoretically drawn endgame.

Balasubramaniun is known to play fast but today was another day as he just sank in a deep thought and found himself losing on time.
