PSB, IOC lock horns in final
Lucknow, Dec 4 (UNI) Defending champion Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) will lock horns with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) for the top place in the K D Singh Babu Memorial Prize Money hockey tournament here tomorrow.
On the penultimate day, IOC beat Western Railway (WR), Mumbai 4-2 and holders PSB outclassed Punjab National Bank (PNB) 4-1 in the semi-finals at the Dhyan Chand astro turf stadium of the Guru Gobind Singh Sports College.
The hard line match for the third place will also be played tomorrow between PNB and WR Mumbai.
In the PSB-PNB semi final, the former -- having a number of international stars -- played like champions.
International Balwinder Singh and Parmindar Singh struck goals in the 9th and 16th minutes respectively taking the lead 2-0. Just before half time, hooter Mandeep Singh of PNB reduced the lead to 1-2 by scoring a field goal for PNB.
After the change of sides, Parminder again proved his worth by scoring another goal in the very first minute making it 3-1, which was further increased to 4-1 by Rajinder Singh five minutes later.
In the other semi final, IOC beat WR Mumbai 4-2.
At half time, the winners were leading 4-1. For IOC Roshan Minz, Deedar Singh, Sardar Singh and Divakar scored one goal each and for Mumbai Hardeep Singh and Rajnish Chaturvedi succeeded in scoring a goal each.
During the 70 minutes encounter, WR got a penalty corner, which was utilised by Rajnish successfully. In contrast, IOC got two, only one was converted to goal by Divakar.
