Written by: Staff

Itanagar, Dec 04 (UNI) More than 60 per cent of 12,299 electorate today exercised their franchise in the byelection to Roing Assembly seat under Lower Dibang Valley district in Arunahal Pradesh.

Polling, which began at 0700 hrs in the morning, was largely peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incident from any of the 37 polling stations under the constituency.

Though polling was moderate during the morning hours, it, however, picked up as the day progressed, sources said.

The district administration had left no stone unturned to make the polling incident-free with elaborate security arrangements.

The state government declared today a paid holiday for the government and public sector undertakings falling under the constituency.

All the electronic voting machines used for polling had been kept under strict supervision of the security forces and would be dispatched tomorrow to the counting centres at Roing, sources stated.

Altogether three candidates - Dature Miuli of the Congress, Raje Menjo (BJP) and Laeta Umbrey (Independent) - were in the fray.

Bypoll to the seat was necessitated following resignation of Congress MLA Mukut Mithi after he was appointed Lt Governor of Puducherry recently.

Counting of votes would take place on December 7, sources added.
