Mulayam rejects CBI probe demand in Ambedkar statue desecration
Lucknow, Dec 4 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today turned down the opposition demand of a CBI probe into the incident of Dr B R Ambedkar's statue desecration in Kanpur last week.
He rejected the opposition demand in the state assmebly after BSP and Congress members raised din in the house disrupting the proceedings for over two hours. They were discontended with the action of state government over the issue.
They alleged the shortcomings in the state machinery allowed the situation to turn violent in Kanpur and other parts of UP after the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar was vandalised in Kanpur.
The remark of parliamentary affairs minister Mohd Azam Khan infuriated the opposition mainly the BSP that it was handiwork of the BSP workers.
Rejecting the opposition demand for CBI probe, the CM said the object of probe should be to ascertain who derived political mileage out of it and how the issue spread to other parts of the country.
Earlier, the members of the two parties rushed to the well of the house and hindered the proceedings. While most BJP members raised the issue from their benches, some dalit members also joined the BSP and Congress in the well.
The Opposition raised the issue as soon as the house sat for the day. Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey asked the members to return to their benches. But unrelenting MLAs staged a dharna at the well, forcing the him to adjourn the proceedings thrice for over two hours.
The house also could not take up the Question Hour following the pandemonium.
Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and state revenue minister Ambika Chaudhury charged the Opposition with raking up the issue unnecessarily.
Congress members led by Jagdambika Pal also raised the issue of harassment of party MLAs from Kanpur Sanjeev Dariabadi and Ajay Kapoor by the district administration, following a clash between Congress and SP workers recently.
Last night, the state government had suspended Kanpur SSP P C Meena for failing to contain violence following the desecration of Dr Ambedkar's statue. The Circle Officer (CO) of Kakadev and two constables had already been placed under suspension for trying to implicate a dalit youth in the case by offering him money.
