Written by: Staff

Aizawl, Dec 04 (UNI) With the sudden spurt in malaria cases in Mizoram during this year, the government has sought additional funds from Centre for medicated mosquito nets.

The state health and family welfare department's joint director (Malaria) Dr Lalkailiani said about 1.5 lakh nets are needed of which one lakh nets was earmarked for the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

She said altogether 119 malarial deaths including 90 children had been registered with the department between January and November this year and hence about 2.5 lakh mosquito nets would be distributed free of cost in the state.

"Most malaria deaths are reported during monsoon particularly in urban areas ," Dr Lalkailiani said adding that there has been a major decrease in the malaria toll in rural areas because of establishment of over 1,500 medicine distribution centres.

She stated that most of the people were affected as they did not take medication in time.
