Kottayam, Dec 4 (UNI) Kerala Karshaka Union (J) State President Jose Chemperi today appealed to the state government to take immediate steps to open seed producing centres in the state and to include them in the agriculture package.

In the wake of the non-germination of the seeds distributed by the National Seeds Corporation and Karnataka Seeds Corporation under the direction of the state agriculture department, the state government should immediately open seed producing centres, he tolsd a press conference here.

Mr Chemperi also contended that the paddy cultivation in the region was in a crisis and the resultant financial liability was unaffordable to farmers.

He said as it had happened due to climate change and rains, steps should be taken to give compensation to farmers under the natural calamity scheme.

As a solution to the seed problem, he suggested that a seed-producing centre should be started at Kuttanad for the farmers in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts and another at Palakkad for the Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts.
