Ambedkar issue rocks RS; House adjourned twice
New Delhi, Dec 4: Noisy protests by Samajwadi Party members over Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati's attempts to raise the issue of the atrocities on Dalits in the Rajya Sabha led to the House being adjourned twice.
The issue was raised by Ms Mayawati who tried in vain to bring up the matter of desecration of Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue as soon as the House assembled for the day.
But Samajwadi Party members, who were quick on their feet, drowned her voice and little could be heard in the din.
As the Bharatiya Janata Party members joined the fray, the BSP leader along with three of her party colleagues went into the well of the House and personally requested the Chair to be given a hearing.
Her pleas that ''the matter is very serious in nature,'' could be heard as cries of ''stop the conspiracy'' and other slogans were raised.
RS Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat then adjourned the House for 15 minutes till 1130 hrs.
After the House reassembled, the BSP members raised the issue again demanding dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government. The Chairman adjourned the House till 1200 hrs as the noise level did not abate.
