30 per cent polling in Kota assembly by-poll

Kota (Bilaspur), Dec 4 (UNI) Amid tight security, an estimated 25 to 30 per cent of the 1.46 lakh electorate had exercised their franchise till 1300 hours for the assembly byelection in Kota constituency in Chhattisgarh.

Polling, which began on a dull note in the morning, picked up later with heavy turnout of women at many places, including in the rural areas.

Six people were injured in a clash between two groups at village Khomsa under Belgahana police station area. After first aid, the injured were referred to a hospital at Bilaspur town.

A high-profile electoral battle is on in Kota between former chief minister Ajit Jogi's wife, Dr Renu, of the Congress and Mr Bhupendra Singh Thakur (BJP) in a 23 corner contest.

Besides state police, five companies of central para military forces are keeping a close vigil in 187 polling stations spread across this rural constituency to ensure smooth polling.
