30 pc polling till noon in Islampur by-poll
Kolkata, Dec 4 (UNI) About 30 per cent polling was recorded till noon in the by-election to Islampur assembly constituency in North Dinajpur district.
''The polling is going on peacefully and there are no reports of untoward incidents,'' Chief Electoral Officer Debasish Sen said.
The polling is being held in 159 booths amid heavy security with moderate to long queues of people waiting to cast their votes.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of CPI(M) MLA Farooq Azam.
While the CPI(M) has fielded Ms Syed Farhat Afroze as its candidate, the Trinamool Congress has renominated Mr Abdul Karim Chowdhury, who had won the seat seven times. The Congress has put up Mr Hamidul Islam, a loyalist of Union Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi.
The Minister's wife Deepa Dasmunsi, who was campaigning in favour of the Congress candidate, was allegedly attacked by some miscreants last week while travelling in a car. The incident triggered tension in the area prompting the administration to take extra security measures on the polling day.
