SUCI calls 24-hour Bangla bandh on Tuesday
Kolkata, Dec 3 (UNI) Following the toes of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) today called a 24-hour statewide bandh on December 5 in protest against the ''police atrocities'' on the protestors of land acquisition at Singur in Hooghly district.
Announcing this, SUCI State Secretary Provas Ghosh alleged that a ''terrible situation'' was prevailing at Singur, where police continued torture on the local people since yesterday.
''We had decided to go for a strike in Hooghly district tomorrow.
But the decision has been revised to highlight the issue throughout the state and give it a broaders shape,'' Mr Ghosh said.
The SUCI, however, had already observed a 12-hour Bangla bandh on December 1, coinciding the bandh, called by Ms Mamata Banerjee on the same issue.
The party, despite being in the opposition, is not in the Trinamool Congress-led Paschimbanga Ganatantrik Front, a platform of several small opposition parties.
Condemning CPI(M) for acting a ''slave'' to capitalists and multinationals, Mr Ghosh said the party had unleashed an attack on the farmers and agricultural workers.
