Kochi, Dec 3 (UNI) Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan today said a special officer would be appointed for monitoring the execution of Rs 2,000 crore Light Metro project here.

Addressing a gathering at the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today, Mr Sreedharan said the state government had given the consent to appoint a special officer on duty to monitor the project.

He said an expression of interest for the project, built under BOT basis, was called for and three concessionists were short listed.

The tenders for the project would be floated shortly, he noted.

Mr Sreedharan said the main impediment for the project, connecting Alwaye with Tripunithura in phase I was the narrowness of some roads and these should be widened.

He said with Light Metro around 20,000 passengers could be commuted in an hour in one direction in the completely elevated transportation facility.

The metro system would not reduce the road capacity and would bring down pollution drastically.

The 25-km route would have 21 stations with fares ranging from Rs 8 to 21.

He said the completion cost would be Rs 2,239 crore if the project was completed in 2010.

Mr Sreedharan said the second phase of the Delhi Metro covering 125 kms would be completed in June 2010.

He said an Airport Line would be part of the second phase whereby one can reach Delhi airport from Connaught Place in 16 minutes.
