Scientific research lacks enough idea: Ramasami

Chennai, Dec 3 (UNI) Research in the field of science was languishing not due to the lack of funds or resources but due to lack of ideas, Union Science and Technology Secretary T Ramasami said.

Inaugurating the Nanotechnology Research Centre at the SRM University in suburban Kattankulathur here last evening, he said ''not funding but idea is the key to research''. The amount of money the researchers were going to generate in the next five years would be four times more than the tenth five year plan, he added.

''If the quality of the research is high, money will automatically come'', he observed. Aim of the researchers should not be strengthening of their bio-data but to arrive at solutions for problems and questions that were not asked by any one, he added.

Research was not about using tools, but arriving at answers to problems for which no questions had been asked, Dr Ramasami added.

Speaking on the occasion, SRM University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu announced an incentive of Rs 50,000 to each student if the paper (on any subject) presented by the University students were accepted in National and International seminars.

University Vice-Chancellor P Sathyanarayan sought Central government's support to take the Nanotechnology Research initiative forward.
