Palghar, Maharashtra, Dec 3 (UNI) Maharashtra Irrigation Minister Ajit Pawar today asked the officials of the Health department to provide best medical services to the tribals in the district.

He said this after inaugurating the newly-constructed Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Somta village in the taluka. The centre, with most modern facilities, was constructed at a cost of around Rs 34 lakh.

The decision to upgrade the Somta PHC was taken after a tanker tragedy fifteen years ago in the neighbouring Medvan area, in which over 100 tribals were killed and more than 200 sustained burn injuries for want of medical assistance.

He said the district should improve upon the health care programmes and called for public participation in the cleanliness drive.

Referring to the minor lapses in the construction work of the PHC, the Minister asked the PWD engineers to carry out the works on various projects with commitment.

He also said the four-lane Mumbai-Ahemedabad Highway was insufficient to meet the increased traffic and should be upgraded to six lanes with access to service roads. The process for the same should be initiated immediately.

State Health Minister Dr Vimal Mundada said her department was committed to providing better health facilities for the tribals and there would be no dearth of funds for the same.

State Tribal Development Minister Dr Vijay Gavit assured all possible assistance and funds from his department for the tribals in the state.

Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik praised the works carried out by the district administration and zilla parishad on various fronts.
