Kerala to consider relaxation in punishment to prisoners: CM

Kannur, Kerala, Dec 3 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today said as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the state, the government was seriously considering providing various benefits to prisoners, including relaxation in punishment.

Inaugurating an e-literacy campaign for prison inmates at the Central Prison here, he said the government had appointed a committee under a retired Justice to study about the relaxation in punishment.

Stating that the government's policy was to ensure the human rights of prisoners, he said justice should be ensured to all culprits and those who involved in crimes without their knowledge.

Mr Achuthanandan suggested that reasonable remuneration should be given to prisoners for their work and also ensure better living standards to them.

State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan presided over the function.
