Experiments are on to match cow's milk with mother's milk: NDRI

Chandigarh, Dec 3 (UNI) Biotechnology used in dairy food processing now a days is pretty safe. While the benefits of mother's milk cannot be matched, experiments are on to modify cow's milk so that it resembles human milk that is best for infants, said Dr B N Mathur of National Dairy Research Institute and National Academy for Agricultural Research and Management.

Addressing an international conference on ''Emerging Processing Technologies for Stimulating Growth,'' held by the Confederation of Indian Industry in conjunction with Agro Tech 2006, Dr Mathur called for a high degree of responsibility as the country's technology entered areas like improving the quality of dairy products.

The conference, chaired by Mr V K Chopra, Vice President, Quality, Glaxo Smithkline Consumer Healthcare Ltd, discussed the huge potential for processing and value addition, particularly in ethnic Indian products, which are largely sold in unbranded form in the market.

Another scientist, Dr S L Goswami, who is also the Joint Director of NDRI, rejoiced at India's ranking in the world with regard to milk production.

Cattle, he said, played a significant role in India from the days of the Indus Valley Civilization ''By cloning cattle, we can increase dairy production manifold,'' he said, elaborating on cloning efforts in labs the world over.

Speaking about Green Pollution Free Development in Dairy Industry, Mr Abhijeet S Puranik, Product Manager, Hilge Rundfos Pumps India Pvt Ltd said that the advancement in machinery would further enhance productivity. These machines are flexible and can be used for different activities. They are user-friendly instruments which can be repaired easily.
