Curfew reimposed in Aurangabad and Nanded

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Dec 3 (UNI) Authorities at Aurangabad and Nanded today decided to clamp curfew from 2000 hours and 2200 hours respectively as a precautionary measure.

These two Marathwada regions witnessed large-scale violence following the desecration of a statue of Dalit icon Dr B R Ambedkar at Kanpur on Tuesday.

Though, there was no untoward incident reported from any part of Aurangabad city, curfew was reimposed this evening as a precautionary measure, police said.

The curfew will be in force till 0600 hrs tomorrow morning, police said and added that if the situation continued to be peaceful at night, the authorities would lift the curfew for good from tomorrow.

The authorities have decided to clamp curfew in Nanded from 2200 hours tonight till 0600 hours tomorrow. There was no untoward incident reported since last evening, police said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Co-operative Minister Patangrao Kadam, who is also Aurangabad district's Guardian Minister chaired a peace committee meeting at the police commissionerate here today.

Cutting across party lines, representatives of various political parties including MP Chandrakant Khaire, former Maharashtra Minister of State for Home MLA Rajendra Darda, MLAs Kalyan Kale and Abdul Sattar attended the meeting, to find ways for maintaining law and order in the city.

The situation in the other troubled town Osmanabad where curfew was lifted yesterday, remained peaceful on the second day today, police added.
