CPI(M) vouches for pre-78 encroachers in Andamans

Port Blair, Dec 3 (UNI) The Andaman CPI(M) has urged the local administration not to evict the pre-1978 encroachers till alternative lands are provided to them.

A party spokesman said here today that recently the revenue authority of Andaman and Nicobar had issued notices to those, who encroached land before 1978, to move out of their occupied land.

The CPI(M) had also submitted a letter to the administrator of Andaman and Nicobar islands demanding alternative land for cultivation before the eviction.

''Lands, presently allotted to them, are reportedly still covered by dense forest in the slope of hills, which are filled with gravel and rocks and are unfit for habitation, '' he added.

The party had also requested not to evict the post-1978 encroachers till the rehabilitation package approved by the Centre is implemented.
