Corn oil consumption reduces heart attacks
Chennai, Dec 3: The Coimbatore based Avinashilingam University for Women has found that consumption of Corn oil would reduce occurrence of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases in humans.
The finding was revealed in a study conducted among 100 people by Department of Food Service Management and Dietetic, which had used ''Avitaa R Gold Corn Oil'' as sample for study among subjects.
The study revealed that ''heart friendly'' corn oil is better than any other oil for lowering blood cholesterol as this reduces elevated triglyceride. This is attributed to the relatively high level of non-triglyceride compounds, especially the plant sterols found in corn oil.
Giving details of the study, University's Department of Food Service Management and Dietetic Reader Prof Dr Dorothy Jaganathan said, ''the results are very positive.
As far as edible liquid vegetable oils are concerned, corn oil is better than any other oil for lowering blood cholesterol and we recommend corn oil for regular consumption.'' Stating that mortality rate due to cardiovascular diseases was steadily increasing, she said this was primarily due to change in food habits.
The research was done to see if corn oil usage in our daily life would reduce the cholesterol content and it was found that corn oil was highly digestible and provided the energy and essential fatty acids (EFA).
''Corn oil is the only oil high in poly-unsaturated fats. A tablespoon of corn oil will satisfy the daily essential fatty acid requirement of a healthy child or adult. Content of corn oil is Anti carcinogenic, immune booster and hypoglycemic,'' she said.
