Arun Gawli arrested over misappropriation of funds

Mumbai, Dec 2 (UNI) Don-turned-politician Arun Gawli was arrested tonight by the sleuths of the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch over misappropriation of funds, police sources said.

Gawli, an independent MLA from Chinchpokli constituency of Central Mumbai, was arrested at around 2100 hrs, Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy said.

His arrest was confirmed by Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil.

Gawli had allegedly received four crore rupees to be disbursed by his Union among the employees of the Globe Electrical Company in Mulund as compensation after it was taken over by another company.

However, funds worth Rs 85 lakh were misappropriated by the Union and a complaint to this effect was filed against Gawli by the employees, sources said.

Crime branch sleuths arrested Gawli on the basis of the complaint under section 406 of the Indian Penal Code, they added.
