AKRSU asks governemt to grant ST status

New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) All Koch-Rajbanshi Students' Union (AKRSU) has asked the Cetre to grant them the Schedule Tribe status without any delay.

A delegation of the AKRSU submitted their memorandum to the Government in this connection.

Talking to UNI, AKRSU President Biswajit Ray said they have submitted their memorandum to the Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah, Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi, Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes, Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Tomorrow, they plan to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Shivraj Patil, he said.

In case the Government does not approve their demands they would gherao Parliament on December 15 followed by a 1000 hrs bandh in the Koch-Rajbanshi dominated areas of Asom, Bodoland and West Bengal, which includes the districts of Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Goalpara, Nalbari, Darrang, Kamrup, Moeigaon, Sonitpur and North Lakhimpur in Assam. Odalsur, Baska and Zirany under the Bodoland Autonomous Council and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur in Bengal.

The AKRSU regretted that so far no initiative was taken to fulfill the demand, he said.
