Uneasy calm in Mulky

Mangalore, Dec 2 (UNI) Uneasy calm prevailed today in Mulky, where two people were killed in police firing last evening when violence broke out during the funeral procession of a local BJP office bearer.

The town, 35 km from here, wore a deserted look after the local administration clamped curfew last evening.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in the areas coming under Mulky police limit today. The traffic on the National highway passing through mulky town was also thin and most of the buses plying between Mangalore and Udupi via Mulky hve been diverted causing inconvenience to office goers and students.

During the funeral procession of Mr Sukhananda Shetty, general secretry of Mulky BJP unit, who was murdered by a group of five people at Kulai near Suratkal in the forenoon yesterday, an unruly mob pelted stones at the shops. It latter attacked the Mulky police station and started pelting stones at the police.

The police resorted to firing as the mob failed to disperse even after lathicharge and bursting of teargas shells. Two persons were killed and three others were injured in the firing. Four people including police Superintendent of police B Dayanad sustained injuries in the stone-pelting. The mob also set fire few shops and vehicles.

Police said the situation was now under control.
