Imphal, Dec 2 (UNI) Anti-Tipaimukh activists burned the effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh yesterday at Bishenpur district, sources said here today.

The Action Committee Against Tipaimukh dam (ACTIP) and several other organisations had been opposing the construction project here.

It had also called for a 24-hour general strike from 1800 hrs yesterday to boycott the Prime Minister's visit here.

The activists have also threatened to go against all political parties in the ensuing ninth Assembly elections scheduled to be held in February next year.

The ACTIP have also announced to intensify economic blockades on the two National Highways and asked the government to scrap the agreement with the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) regarding Tipaimukh project.

Meanwhile, the Churachandpur District Students Union (CDSU) also called for an indefinite strike from 1800 hrs today in protest against the government's failure to fulfil their demands.

The CDSU said the government had earlier assured to appoint a new Deputy Commissioner for the district but in vain.

However, no untoward incident had been reported, police said.
