Educationist, Cong leader Bhagawan Lakhar dead

Guwahati, Dec 2 (UNI) Noted educationist and veteran Congress leader Bhagawan Chandra Lakhar died of a cardiac arrest at a local hospital today.

He was 71 and is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Dr Lakhar was currently serving as the chairman of the Assam Education Commission.

Family sources informed that he was admitted to a local hospital last evening after a massive heart attack. He breathed his last at about 1300 hours today.

The cremation will take place tomorrow.

Dr Lahkar was the founder principal of the Gauhati Commerce College, the leading institution in commerce education in NE, from 1962 to 1996.

He held also the distinction of being the youngest principal at the age of 27 years.

Besides having a number of research papers and other publications to his credit, Dr Lahkar also held the position of the advisor to Chief Minister, Education, Economic Reforms and Information and Public Relations, during the last tenure of the present government.

He was an active Congress supporter and had also unsuccessfully contested the 1985 Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket.
