Bandh in Phagwara against desecration of Ambedkar's statue

Phagwara, Dec 1 (UNI) A complete bandh was observed today in Phagwara town in protest against the desecration of Dr B R Ambedekar's statue in Kanpur on Tuesday.

Hundreds of activists belonging to various dalit organisations burnt effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav near Gol Chowk on National Highway.

They held demonstration and forced the shopkeepers to close down shops.

Though police made adequate security arrangments to prevent any untoward incident, tension prevailed in the town, when several dalits installed a new statue of Dr Ambedekar at bypass chowk on Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road this afternoon.
