Mysore, Dec 1 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today accused the Congress of creating an unwarranted situation and making ground works to postpone the December four Chamundeswari Assembly byelection, fearing defeat at the hustings.

Addressing mediapersons here, he charged the Congress with trying to bring pressure on the Election Commission to postpone the election and making all sorts of political gimmicks. The Congress' actions had forced the people to lose faith in the EC.

Mr Yediyurappa appealed to the EC to provide heavy security to all the independent candidates in the fray until polling ended.

He accused the Congress of making series of baseless complaints to the EC, which the latter had obliged. There was no necessity to deploy paramilitary forces for the bypoll as the state police were capable of handling the situation. He denied that the BJP and JD (S) were trying to cast bogus votes with duplicate identity cards.

He challenged the Congress leaders to come for an open debate on a single platform on the development works undertaken by the JD(S)-BJP coalition Government in the state instead of making unnecessary remarks.
