Kolkata/Singur, Dec 1: Even as Trinamool Congress sponsored Bangla Bandh progressed, the state government today began fencing the land earmarked for Tata Motors at Singur amid some protests.

Land demarcation and fencing began at Singur under the supervision of West Bengal Industrial Developmental Corporation as planned under heavy police protection. Work progressed peacefully as the workers started started grafting woden longs to demarcate the land to be given to the Tata Motors from the Khaserberia region.

It has been learnt that WBIDC had outsourced the work to local contractors who employed local people for the work.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told UNI work is progressing peacefully in Singur.

"There was a minor incident when a few people gathered to show protest. But that is over now. A sizable police posting has been there to see that no untoward incidents take place," he said.

Problems began when around 600 people, mostly farmers, gathered on the farmlands near Joymollahr Bandh and began agitating. They started gathering people by blowing of conches.

But the presence of a heavy posse of policemen prevented them from progressing any further.

However, reports said that at least a 1000 local people have been engaged in the fencing work and the fact that people have come out to work for the project is seen as a positive sign.

The local authorities have clamped Section 144 of CRPC in the region to ensure peaceful progress of work.

This is the first physical step taken by the state government towards handing over of the 997 acres of land to the Tata Motors authorities.
