Sidhu's resignation rejected by Speaker on technical grounds

New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has on "technical grounds" not "accepted" the letter of resignation submitted to him by BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu today.

Sources at the Speaker's office said the MP representing Amritsar has been conveyed that his letter of resignation could not be accepted "in the present form." "As per the rules and procedure of the Lower House, a resignation letter should be straight, simple and unconditional," the sources told UNI, while pointing out that "such a letter should not have any reason." Under rule 240, a member of the Lok Sabha should not give any reason nor put any condition.

In the case of the letter of Mr Sidhu he had chosen to give some reasons for his resignation.

Mr Sidhu put in his papers hours after the Punjab and Haryana High Court convicted him in a 18-year-old road rage case in which a man was killed.
