Puducherry, Dec 1 (UNI) As many as 164 volunteers of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), including Anantharaman MLA and local office bearers, were arrested when they put up a road blockade near the Periyar Statue here today.

The JIPMER Anti-Conversion People's Joint Action Committee had announced an agitation to condemn PMK founder leader S Ramdoss for allegedly abusing Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, JAC leaders and JIPMER employees.

Mr Anantharaman also had announced that the PMK would organise a counter agitation at the same venue if the JAC went ahead with its proposal to condemn the party leader. However, police had denied permission to both the groups which sought to defy the police ban.

Accordingly, PMK volunteers took out a procession and put up a road blockade near the Periyar Statue much before the JAC members assembled there and were subsequently arrested.
